Brazil!

Brazil's Atlantic rainforest is one of the richest and most threatened places on Earth, and I've been lucky enough to visit parts of it on two occasions. This narrow band of coastal rainforest is home to almost 900 bird species, and more than 200 of them live nowhere else in the world. Centuries of clearing have cut the forest down to scattered fragments, though, and the region now holds about 45% of Brazil's threatened bird species. The photos on this page show some of the birds I saw there, from brilliant tanagers and hummingbirds to shy birds of the forest floor. I share them partly because they are beautiful, but mostly because I hope they help people get to know these birds and care about protecting them. Every species here depends on the forest that remains, and on the people working to save and restore it.
