<image:caption>The Red-and-white Crake (Rufirallus leucopyrrhus) has some color combinations that it can pull off with style. A marsh bird, this was the first of several new species for me that I photographed at Sitio Macuquinho near Salesopolis, Sao Paulo, Brazil. It has a partially greenish beak, red eyes, white breast, rufous head and neck, chestnut back, coral legs and feet, and distinctive white and black barred underfeathers.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Blue Dacnis (Dacnis cayana) often frequent treetops looking for insects, though this rainy day they came down to check out a flower pot at Ninho da Cambacica. Here’s a male (bright blue with a black throat) and female (light green with a light blue crown).</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Sharpbill (Oxyruncus cristatus) has no close relatives so is placed in its own family. As the name implies, it has a cone-shaped sharp bill and is greenish-yellow with white and black spots below. It has a rarely seen reddish-orange crest on top of its head (hence, the “cristatus” part of its scientific name). This one was on the grounds of the Hotel Donati lodge located within Brazil’s first national park, the Parque Nacional do Itatiaia.</image:caption>

<image:caption>At Walden Ponds, near Boulder, CO, I followed this Red-tailed Hawk (Buteo jamaicensis) through 3 perches and around 2 lakes to get a closer photo. When I catch up, I lift 10+ lbs of camera and lens just to find a branch in the hawk’s face. I mutter my complaint, and as if hearing, it leans its head to my right for a clear shot. Seldom works out that way!</image:caption>

<image:caption>They may be relatively common, but I don’t often see Black-crowned Night Herons (Nycticorax nycticorax) here in Colorado, largely because they are most active during early dawn and late dusk when light is dim. It was a bonus today when I saw two, an adult here with a freshly-caught fish, and a juvenile further along the pond settling in for its nap. This adult was distracted by its fish so I was able to creep close and photograph it through deep brush along the shore.</image:caption>

<image:caption>It's late September, so migration is bringing the Yellow-rumped Warblers (Setophaga coronata) to lower elevations, this one and a modest amount of others to St. Vrain State Park near Longmont, CO. This was formerly known as Audubon’s Warbler, but was lumped with the Myrtle Warbler in 1973 after it was found that the two species were genetically similar and aptly created hybrids.</image:caption>

At this elevation the Ponderosa Pines are plentiful, which means the Pygmy Nuthatches (Sitta pygmaea) require only a little patience to find. This one appeared to be looking for insects in the Ponderosa’s reddish jigsaw-like bark</image:caption>

<image:caption>I went looking for Wood Ducks this morning to no avail, but found some nice photo opportunities along a reservoir near Littleton, CO. This Red-tailed Hawk (Buteo jamaicensis) aggressively flew at me several times as I was walking the trail photographing Red-winged Blackbirds eating seeds in weed patches. I wished I had my 100-400mm instead of the 600mm I was carrying. They come fast and large, so it startles a bit.</image:caption>

Long considered a subspecies of the Masked Yellowthroat, now its own species, the Southern Yellowthroat hops and flits around very quickly close to the ground among grasses, cattails, and weeds. <image:caption>The national bird of Brazil, the Rufous-bellied Thrush (Turdus rufiventris) is known for its beautiful song. It's memorialized in Antônio Gonçalves Dias' poem Canção do Exílio (Song in Exile), written while he was studying in Portugal: "My land has palm trees where the thrush sings. The birds that sing here do not sing as they do there. Our skies have more stars, our valleys have more flowers. Our forests have more life. Our lives have more love." The last two lines here are included in the Brazilian national anthem. This photo was taken one chilly morning at the beautiful Sitio Macuquinho Lodge.</image:caption>

It has a distinctive black-banded white crescent on its upper breast, buff-colored arrow tips on its coverts, and a dark head with buff and rufous striations. <image:caption>The Saw-billed Hermit (Ramphodon naevius) geographic range is confined to southeast Brazil. While it has somewhat drab coloring (the color of my college major’s tassel at graduation was “drab”, so I am a bit partial to drab), it has bold patterns and beautiful rufous/orange neck, cheeks, and tail feathers. And, almost discernible in my photo, a hooked beak tip.</image:caption>

With covered decks high in the canopy, it was very comfortable observing many species in their natural habitat. Here are the sexually dimorphic male and female Green Honeycreepers (Chlorophanes spiza), both with distinctive red eyes and yellow slightly-curved beaks. The male is an almost turquoise blue with a black head, while the female is largely a yellow-ish green.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Located down a winding, sometimes bumpy, road near Sao Paulo, the Pousada Salve Floresta property includes lush forests and a few small ponds that attract some of southeast Brazil’s most amazing birds. The beautiful Blond-crested Woodpeckers (Celeus flavescens) can be found there. Though their favorite diet is ants and termites found high in the canopy (they carve/drill new nests each year in arboreal ant or termite nests), they will come down for fruits, berries and insects on the ground, or maybe just to get their picture taken.</image:caption>
